Portolan printed and colored on goat skin signed “Peter Goos /Johannes van Keulen”.
The left part corresponding to Europe and the Mediterranean Sea up to TurKey, the right part to the boreal part of the world from Canada to New Zemble in Russia.
Framed and under anti UV glass.
Nota : Only other similar known by same maker in Rotterdam Marine Museum (photo on request).
Reference : Documentation provided by Mr. Sjoerd de Meer curator of Cartography Maritiem Museum Rotterdam : this chart on vellum of Europe in Mercator-projection is the second state of the chart published by Pieter Goos, just after 1658. It was republished, according to Günter Schilder, around 1680. In an advertorial in an atlas of 1688 Van Keulen mentions four charts on vellum he published, among them this chart. Information concerning this chart can be found in the latest book by Günter Schilder Sailing across the World’s Oceans: History and Catalogue of Dutch Charts printed on vellum 1580-1725 (Leiden: Brill 2019), p. 749-752.
