German ivory sundial in the shape of a barrel made c. 1650/1660

Ivory sundial in the form of a barrel engraved with three friezes of scroll leaves and inlaid of orange amber pellets.

The barrel unscrews into five parts revealing a horizontal sundial with compass, a lunar volvelle, a pomander (lid pierced with small holes for the flavors) and a snuff box (unpierced lid). The compass set into one half of the barrel, has a 16-points wind rose, printed on watercolored paper and a blued-iron needle with a brass pivot. A glass plate over all and above is a circular horizontal dial with a brass hour-circle graduated IIII-XII-VIII, subdivided to 15 minutes, pierced by a large aperture in the centre to see the compass, and with a hinged triangular gnomon (latitude 50°) folding flat when not in use. The other half of the barrel carries a brass lunar volvelle consists of a fixed and a rotating disc pierced with a circular aperture revealing the Moon’s phases. The fixed disc is engraved with two circular scales, one (outer) is a lunar-age scale, graduated clockwise 1-30, numbered by 1, the other (inner) is an hour scale numbered clockwise 1-12 twice. The rotatable disc, with a pointer, is engraved with an hour scale numbered clockwise 4-12-8.
